Module 2
Say What You Mean? Communication Styles
Direct and indirect talk, hints and context, feedback, disagreement, small talk and humor.
Two people can speak the same language perfectly and still completely misunderstand each other. One says “maybe” and means “please ask me again.” The other hears “maybe” and thinks “no.” One gives honest feedback as a gift between friends. The other goes home and cries.
This is the heart of the course. Most everyday friction between cultures starts with communication: not what we say, but how we say it.
In this module, you’ll explore:
- direct and indirect communication, and why both are forms of politeness
- how much meaning lives in the words, and how much in everything around them
- the many meanings of “yes,” and how to hear a “no” that’s never spoken
- how to give and receive feedback across cultures
- how to disagree without damaging a relationship
- small talk, silence and humor, which are often the last things a newcomer understands
If you’re short on time, Lessons 2.1, 2.3 and 2.4 are the ones not to skip.
