Module 7
The Emotional Journey of Living Abroad
Culture shock, life in a second language, finding where you belong, and families who adapt at different speeds.
Moving to a new country is exciting, and it’s also hard: often harder than people expect, and sometimes in ways they don’t expect at all. Capable adults find themselves crying in supermarkets. Confident professionals feel like children because they can’t find the right words. Families who moved together find themselves adapting at very different speeds.
None of this means something is wrong with you. It means you’re human, and you’re doing something difficult.
This module is about looking after yourself, and the people around you. You’ll explore:
- culture shock and culture fatigue, and what actually helps
- what it’s like to live and work in a second language, and how locals can make it easier
- bubbles, bridges and belonging: how newcomers find their place, and how hosts can help
- children, teenagers, partners and grandparents adapting at different speeds
If you’re short on time, Lesson 7.1 is the one not to skip.
